What's in a Name

Swampspace Gallery

is at a loss for words in
presenting

Presque Vu
by
Maitejosune Urrechaga

Opening May 11   3 - 10 pm

Yes, No or I Don't Know Why, are common responses to questions. When the answer is " On the Tip of the Tongue", some call it "Presque Vu" or almost seen.   To experience the work of Maitejosune Urrechaga is similar in character to these psycholinguistic phenomenon.   For her solo show, Maitejosune explores through portraiture the universal experience of unconscious thoughts and impulses as yet unexplained by science or spirituality.

December @ swampspace

Swampspace presents

100 Years of Artitude  1913 - 2013

Pataphysics for Dummies

Opening Reception December 1,  2012

6-11

SWAMPSPACE

The director of Swampspace Gallery in the Miami Design District announced today that Swampspace will present a special exhibition to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach.  Aptly titled "100 Years of Artitude 1913-2013 Pataphysics for Dummies" the installation is a centennial celebration of the artistic development of craft and culture.  Not since the ArmoryShow of 1913 have esthetic seismographs detected such considerable tremors and creative rumblings emanating from fecund minds.   With an amalgamation of historical artifacts and the metaphysical,  Swampspace spirals into the subjectivity of experienced reality; the inseparability of past, present, and future; and the power of language as a pataphor for attitudes in art market nihilism, truth of contradictions and exceptions.

About Swampspace

What would become of our beloved River of Grass without the water that sustains it.
What would South Florida be without the arts that nourish culture and civility.

Launched in 2008 from the studio of artist Oliver Sanchez, Swampspace presents monthly exhibitions of innovative talent.  On the leading edge of Miami's Arts Awakening,  Swampspace defines a brand that is both sophisticated and unvarnished.    Ocean Drive Magazine's Brett Sokol wrote " Miami's Best Kept Art Secret".  Biscayne Times Anne Tschida said " Sanchez is likely the most talented and prolific Miami Artist you've never heard of."    But the truth is everyone knows about Swampspace and the wizard behind the curtain.   Now at a new deluxe location in the Design District,   Swampspace continue to deliver cutting-edge exhibitions for arts lovers of varied lifestyles who come together and share a unique creative experience.   Because it is perhaps the preeminent artist run project space in Miami,  Swampspace is a recognized destination.    Because it is the antithesis of commercial galleries and institutional museums,   Swampspace is aptly called the Un-Gallery.   Because people are thirsty for culture, they visit Swampspace like mariners to Morocco.

making Sh*t

NYC Pedicab Celeb Juan Carlos Rodriguez with the keen observer Tschida.

I'm not making this up, Anne Tschida local legend called me a Fabricator on the pages of the Biscayne Times. With a sharp pen and sapphire eyes on Miami's art scene, Tschida hammers it home with this bit of ink on the humble uncle O. A regular visitor to Swampspace Gallery, Anne recognizes the intimate unvarnished sophistication that lurks under the radar of predictable scripted art reporting in South Florida. Our wild wordsmith Tschida...! rhymes with cheetah.

Another regular visitor to swampspace is little Lily of Lil Muse Lily, a place inspired.

Art In Private Places

is pleased to announce

Failing Upwards
the christening before the launch

A soft opening at our
new deluxe location!

Sunday March 11th 4-10pm

Where the Sidewalk Ends

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

Season Premier 2012

Southernmost Situations
presents

Free Key West

opens Saturday January 14
6-12 pm

SouthernMost Situations presents Free Key West.

A collection of objects acquired in 48 hours. Victims of the economic recession go to Key West to see if the combination of alcohol and an island mentality are a catalyst for a new form of consumerism and plundering debauchery. Combining "found" object and video, the haggard stories of 48 hours are told in a fresh context.

All That Glitters is Not Sold

Geez, Where's the Beach?

Like no other perennially themed week of events in South Florida's SOBE,
ABMB has once again cast an air of entitlement on the hollowed hegemony of the elite art industry and residual motivations to the local arts community. That which lures jet-loads of world-class enthusiasts is part home-grown part import. It is the habitual desire to live by art that transcends cultural and economic distinctions. Committed minds are no doubt scheming over next year's fair when all the hullabaloo will be repeated like a broken record.

NADA ZipZero

Two heads are better than one, as these charming fixtures pleasingly display. They don't have much to say but, hey they are a welcoming sight for lost tourist wondering if they are in the right place.

Pool Gallery Berlin, i want one of these...
OHWOW in their Design District Tent, great schmear art.

Design Miami in SOBE, way to go w the swampiness!

Overall i rate Design Miami Fair a shiny 14-karat thumbs sideways.

HorneyMen

The folks at Shafrazi Booth were pleasantly accessorized with a treasure trove of Robert Williams awe inspiring masterpieces. What is beyond comprehension is how Williams can be so revered in the west coast and virtually unknown in the east coast.

Molly Hatchet

It is stuff like these reclining dummies in revolutionary costumes that begs the question,
WTF, i like that?!

Here are a few of my favorites...
Nerdreams
Arshamowlsmarts
TomSachsRocksApollo
another WTF moment
Queue for the Infinity Booth of Mirrors
SleepingSillyPuddyPrincess
...and finally this amazing display of WTF cardboard boxes at ABMB

Yes there were predictable blue-chip works on display, but there were also plenty of absolutely bizarre pieces that leave many scratching their heads with thoughts of,
"I Can Do That... But Why?"

The Kiss of Art

We opened Swampspace Gallery so as to have an excuse for missing half the stuff there is to do during Art Week in Miami.

What was your excuse?

The Kissing Booth Show

FOR IMMEDIATE RELIEF 11/20/2010

Who: SWAMPSPACE Gallery

What: The "KISSING BOOTH" Show

When: Opening December 1, 2010 (closing Dec.15)

Where: 3821 N.E. First Court Miami, Florida 33137

Calling All Smoochers

Join Swampspace Gallery to celebrate the romantic nostalgia of love with the much anticipated"Kissing Booth" show, featuring artworks by Kenny Scharf and Oliver Sanchez. Kissing Booths were light spirited attractions at carnivals and fairs of days gone by. On the surface these contraptions were used to tantalize and loosen our pockets. They are sentimental relics with an enduring practical purpose. Reviving their benevolent tradition, the Kissing Booth show is a fundraiser benefiting the students of Design and Architecture Senior High school. But the gallery installation like the "Eternal Kiss" is much much more.

Love is Blue

In 1907 sculptor Constantin Brancusi took a chunk of stone and with a few simple cuts, transformed the rock into an iconic sculpture. With the canons of amour that preceded him, Brancusi illustrated the soulful power of this singular carnal contact. His work serves as a constant reminder that there is no substitute for kissing. Chiming in with salacious intent, the very kissable Bob Hope once said "People who throw kisses are mighty hopelessly lazy". At the risk of smothering the flames of the kiss, the huggable Confucius proclaimed, "Kissing is like drinking sea water. You drink, and your thirst increases". Today many find themselves at the crossroads of emotions. With salty tears we proceed along the paths of contentedness and despair. The intimacy of a kiss shared by two being in a single space in time is like happiness, it feels best when you give it to someone else.

Pucker Up

During the festivities of the prestigious ABMB 2010 art fair and the sophisticated reveling in theMiami Design District, one destination certain to be unique and uncouth is the Kissing Booth.

swampspace the un-gallery

IS ONE YEAR OLD

It is a matter of fact that many things have been discussed at my studio in the design district. Someone once said the place is the heart of the hood. Maybe so but for me it feels more like an appendage, people could do without. Even though a purpose may be illusive, coincidence is fate and persistence has merit. Another visitor expressed the math equation 365 X 80 = a measly 29,200 or not a big number by todays figures. Turns out that sum is the amount of days in a good life expectancy, or at least a long one. Geeb! make Every Day count... even the ones we squander in the pursuit of idling.

BORDELLO BODEGA
the genesis

So it is that we mark one year to the day when swampspace gallery opened its doors. The place was conceived at a time of certainty when all that prime swamp-estate needed was a name and willing appreciators. Google has graciously and automotronically stepped up to cement this occasion with their support of a new blog devoted to swampspace, the venue, its events, ambitions and accreditation.

first a word from our sponsor

What better than to have your sweat equity and futility parley beyond gestation and have an idea grow legs, take flight and stand alone.
