Park Your Karma Elsewhere

Thieves Abscond with Symbols of Three Abrahamic Faiths.

Miami Design District
January 9, 2009

Local neighborhood security american police have confirmed that a styrofoam sculpture was stolen Saturday night shortly after 2:00 am during Gallery Walk night. The monumental artwork was situated on private property opposite artist studios and on display for public viewing . The artwork is comprised of architectural models depicting three houses of worship; a Christian Cathedral, a Judaic Temple and an Islamic Mosque. The artist/sculptor said he was well aware of the risk of damage or theft in placing his work in an empty lot overnight but was more interested to see how the public would react to such vulnerability. Not surprisingly there were many positive comments that night by art enthusiasts that used the now empty site of Design Miami to park their cars to avoid tickets.

Someone said, "This is probably not a Hate Crime, it is an Asinine Love of Art Crime".

Strangely enough the pagan bandits inexplicably neglected to take the centerpiece of the sculpture.

The Irrefutable Kernel of Truth.

The Artists League of Greater Miami has offered an Award for anyone with information leading to an arrest of the perpetrators. Please leave anonymous tip in comments.

American Marble Recycled

"Jacob Epstein" 2008 swampthing

It was recently noted in the blogoscene that there is a deficiency in miami art postings, maybe it is because there are other more critical issues to consider, like getting the rent money. But like a good art-soldier, here is a bit of good news for artists who work with american marble aka styrofoam. As a fabricator to the stars I have been using eps foam professionally for years with great results... and allot of left-overs that are often re-used to make more art. Polystyrene is used in many plastics applications and is definitely not bio-degradable. Finally there is a 'green solution" to the great styro-dilemma. Thanks to new pal Will for the info:

Blue Earth Solutions - Blue, the new green. We recycle Styrofoam®™

Styroguy - Fun with styro-scraps.

Styrofoam is a curious passive metaphor for our unsustainable modern plastics dominated life-styles.

playdo and artsitotle

Standing tall high above the courtyard at Design and Architecture Senior High school are the modern day versions of Plato and Aristotle made in the like-ness of the kids. The Kids sculptures at DASH in the Design District were made for R & R Studio in 2003. They are hand-crafted from a single block of american marble (aka styrofoam) chewing gum and spit and have survived tropical storms katrina and wilma. Schools like DASH and New World provide the knowlegde and support needed to ensure the next generation of artists. Some motivated kids commute for hours to attend magnet schools, to get the education needed in today's creative industries.

let the eagle soar for no reason

This wall sculpture of the eagle from the u.s. coin is one of three made for polish artist Piotr Uklanski. It's a joy to carve american marble, aka styrofoam, using really sharp knives. Most countries have a national bird. Here it is the bald eagle but a better choice could be the great north american wild turkey. Anyways the Rubell Family Collection has one and the other two flew the coop across the big pond.
